5 Items You Need for Your New Puppy

Getting a new puppy is such an exciting time for your family! You're probably busy basking in the adorableness, playing fetch, or taking your new dog for lots of fun walkies, but remember, your new pup needs a few things.

First Things First - A Trip to the Veterinarian

The first thing your new puppy is going to need is a good veterinarian. If you bought a dog from a breeder, they may have included the results of their first visit, and you can skip this step, but if you adopted a dog from a shelter, make sure you take them to a vet for a visit as soon as possible.

Most vets are very busy, so make sure you call in advance to set up an appointment. Don't wait till the last minute, or they may be booked! You may want to visit a couple of offices before you decide, to make sure the facilities are clean, the staff is pleasant and helpful, and that they seem to have happy clientele.

The first visit for your puppy will probably consist of a routine checkup, making sure your dog is caught up on its shots, and checking for any worms or parasites. Make sure you write down the care instructions or ask for a printed version, and follow them to the letter. Schedule a follow up at the recommendation of your vet! This is the beginning of a long relationship that will ensure that your puppy has a long and healthy life, so make sure you have a good relationship with your vet!

Next, Consider Obedience Training

Puppies can be a handful to say the least. If you are not experienced with training puppies, you may want to invest in puppy classes. This is a great environment for your puppy to socialize with other dogs (and humans), making them more comfortable around both. Most obedience training classes will teach some basics, like -

  • Basic obedience and commands

  • Behavior problem solving techniques

  • Household and public good manners

  • Preventative health care

Training classes will turn your puppy into a relaxed, easy-going, calm, friendly, confident, and well-adjusted adult dog.

Consider Crate Training Your Puppy

Crate training is important for a puppies feeling of well being, and makes things a lot easier for the owner as well. It gives your puppy a space to feel calm and relaxed, and can help with separation anxiety.

Make sure you get a dog crate that is big enough for your puppy to lie down, turn around and be comfortable in. But don't get something too big - they might decide to make one corner the bathroom! If you have a small breed, consider a crate with a divider so that as they grow, you don't need to replace it with a larger one.

Have your puppy spend enough time in the crate that they view it as their home. You want your dog to associate the crate with with being safe and content. So, don't treat the crate as a punishment.

Now, the Fun Stuff - Toys, clothes, beds, and treats!

Your dog is now ready to be showered with gifts! First things first, they will need to eat and drink. Whether you decide on wet food, kibble, or a combination, make sure to pick them up a couple of high quality food and water bowls from our collection. Your vet can help you decide what kind of food is appropriate and a good feeding schedule.

Next, how about a bed to sleep on? Puppies love sleeping and will be doing it a lot, so make sure you get the most comfortable (and cutest) bed available. Large dogs may need an orthopedic bed to keep their joints elevated.

Every good dog deserves treats! Perfect for rewarding your good boy or girl. Make sure you get them something high in protein. Avoid treats with high levels or fat or too many preservatives. Some of the best treats have one ingredient, like these freeze dried liver treats, or these chicken jerky treats

Puppies are very playful, so make sure you grab some toys to keep them occupied. Make sure they have something to chew on, to minimize the number of your shoes they destroy.
